After a tedious run of Othello at the public theatre, a more exciting prospect has arrived in the form of an Irish export. ‘Silver Stars’, a home-grown collaboration by Sean Millar and Brokentalkers theatre company, is a song cycle based on the lives of older Irish gay men.
Commissioned in 2008 by Bealtaines, the show was previously a hit at the Dublin theatre festival and now takes the stage in New York as part of the Under the Radar festival opening January 6th.
Based on singer/songwriter Sean Millar’s interviews with homosexual men from Dublin to New York, the show is composed of the real life stories of ordinary men and is performed by a community cast of Irish gay men, many of whom had never set foot on stage before this production.
The show, standing along side others from Belgium, Canada, Poland and the UK, promises to capture tales of love, loss, family, spirituality, defiance and joy.
This is so random but here goes… Performance Space 122 has an amazing show from Ireland at our 2010 COIL Festival, called Mimic. I had a chance to see it yesterday and it is truely the best show I have seen in a long time but for some reason has not gotten a lot of press. Which brings me to my question, you wouldnt happen to know of anyone in New York City that would be interested in coming to see the show and writing about it? They would have to have a blog, paper, something that they wrote for on a regular basis but that is about it. I can promise they will not be disappointed, the show is wonderful.
Thank you,
Sarah
