J.D. Robb is actually a very assertive looking woman by the name of Nora Roberts. Why people still use pen names I don’t know, maybe she thinks her own somewhat underwhelming. Nora Roberts however, is a fantastic storyteller.

I happen to be a crime genre fiend but for all you non-crime fiends this is not your typical Dan Brownesque read. It’s true: crime novels have all become strikingly similar lately. They all want to delve into the realm of religious imagery and the occult. Roberts hasn’t bought in, she’s stayed true to the ‘In Death’ series, this being the 27th novel in the collection.

Set in 2060, the plot surrounds my favourite heroine to date, Eve Dallas, who goes head to head with one of the nastiest villains ever created by Roberts. Nicknamed ‘The Groom’, he tortures his female victims and abandons their bodies, after placing silver rings on their wedding fingers. The Groom having remained elusive before, Eve hunts him down with all her ammunition (futuristic deep data mining being one of her key weapons). Little does she know however, that his final victim is a bit closer to home.

Fret not about the futuristic element, it plays little part and the novel never verges on sci-fi. Instead prepare yourself for some warp speed, character driven narrative that will keep you up all night.
